| MEET MY DELICIOUS LIONHEADS |

| Let's chat |
What can I say about the wonderful new breed, the Lionhead? They are cute as buttons, smart, inquisitive, energetic, sweet and naughty at the same time, and so interesting to breed and observe. They are true breeders, the does are excellent mothers, they rarely have first-time litter disasters...on and on. Their origin is Belgium. In the 1990s, breeders began to cross the Netherland (Belgium) Dwarf with the Swiss Fox, then eventually introduced the Jersey Wooly. They started to be imported to the United States from England in 1999. Personally, I discovered them in 2004 when I purchased a trio. Soon I acquired bucks and does from different lines from my original foundation stock, and now have about 4 different breed lines making up my herd. At this point in time, there are 8 COD (certificate of development) colors: Tort, black, sable point, siamese sable, ruby-eyed white, chestnut, fawn and blue. Tort is the only color that has passed the first presentation. Until that color passes successfully in two more presentations at ARBA conventions, no other colors will be presented Because breeders crossed unusual colors when the breed was first introduced both abroad and in the U.S., many bizarre color combinations crop us even when breeding standard COD colors. For example, the sable point marten on the left. That is not a recognized COD color, but nevertheless, is quite stunning. |
